Africa Harvest in New Project to Popularize Sorghum

Africa Harvest in partnership with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) recently launched the Sorghum for Multiple Use project (SMU project) designed to popularize and increase the demand of the crop. The project is funded by the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD)


"The project goal is to improve livelihoods of poor rural small-scale farmers in Kenya and Tanzania", Dr. Mary Mgonja of ICRISAT says.


The project will support the development and demonstrate new sorghum multi-purpose varieties that have higher Yielding and adaptation properties in the Eastern province of Kenya and in the Northern and central zones of Tanzania.

During the launch, Africa Harvest CEO said "reducing food insecurity and poverty is essential for people living in the Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) who are most vulnerable, especially to climate change ".
